Shooting Hoops for a Good Cause

March 29, 2017

Dribble. Shoot. Score…Roll? It’s not something you normally see in basketball games, but for the One Chair at a Time organization, it’s how the game is played.

Every April, One Chair at a Time brings together 24 teams from the community to participate in a friendly competition of wheelchair basketball. Team BSA isn’t one to shy away from a fun game of basketball, especially when it’s to help kids and young adults across the High Plains.

“Wheelchair Madness raises money for wheelchairs for paraplegic athletes in the Texas Panhandle,” says BSA Team Captain and Occupational Therapist Octavio Holguin. “This is the only organization of its kind in our area for adapted sports.”

Wheelchair Madness requires all team members to play basketball from provided wheelchairs. This gives community members a chance to see the challenges that are faced each day by those with disabilities.  Team BSA has participated in the tournament since 2015.

“We had 20 BSA employees sign up for our team in less than 24 hours this year, so they obviously understand the importance of this organization,” Holguin said.

Last year, the proceeds from Wheelchair Madness helped the organization purchase 12 sports wheelchairs for local athletes, as well as send four athletes to the Endeavor Games in Oklahoma and two athletes to the National Junior Disability Championships.

“We’re really excited to get to play for such a great cause. Being a therapist, I love getting to participate in adapted sports,” explained Holguin.

Team BSA invites you come cheer them on and support a great cause on April 18 at Caprock High School at 6:30 p.m. Wheelchair Madness preliminary rounds will be held April 17-20 at 6:30 p.m. each evening at Caprock High School with the championships at Bushland High School on April 23 at 2 p.m.
