TCAR

Stop Strokes Before They Happen

Dr. Chance Irwin and Dr. David Langley are the only physicians in the region designated as 2020 TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) Clinical Operators of Experience by Silk Road Medical, Inc. TCAR, a minimally invasive carotid artery repair surgery, reduces the risk of stroke in high-risk surgical patients with carotid artery disease.

How does TCAR work?

During the procedure, the carotid artery is accessed through a minimally invasive incision. Blood flow to the brain is temporarily reversed, causing plaque fragments that may break off during the procedure to be diverted away from the brain. A stent is then placed inside the artery to stabilize plaque and minimize a patient’s risk of future stroke.

Benefits of TCAR

This procedure takes half the time of a traditional carotid artery repair procedure and requires a shorter hospital stay. TCAR has the lowest reported-to-date rate of stroke at only 1.4%.

As compared with traditional carotid artery repair procedures, TCAR:

  • Leaves smaller scars
  • Offers patients faster recovery times
  • Results in less tissue damage

Am I a candidate for TCAR?

If you have carotid artery disease and are considered to be high-risk for traditional surgery, you may qualify for TCAR. For more information, please call 806-212-6604.
