BSA Named One of the Nation’s Top 100 Hospitals®

March 14, 2019
AMARILLO, TEXAS (March 13, 2019) – BSA is the only hospital in the Texas Panhandle named as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by IBM Watson Health. This is the sixth time BSA has been recognized with this award since 2012. The annual study spotlights the bestperforming hospitals in the U.S. based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics and data. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

“To again be recognized among the best in the nation is a reflection of BSA’s ongoing commitment to continuously improve healthcare outcomes while providing outstanding care and controlling costs,” said Bob Williams, BSA President/CEO. “I want to thank our employees and physicians whose intense focus and hard work makes recognition like this possible. They are an exceptional team and I’m honored to work beside them.”

The Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® study found that the top-performing hospitals in the country achieved better risk-adjusted outcomes while maintaining both a lower average cost per beneficiary and higher profit margin than non-winning peer group hospitals. Extrapolating the results of this year's study, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:

• More than 103,000 additional lives could be saved.
• More than 38,000 additional patients could be complication-free.
• More than $8.2 billion in inpatient costs could be saved.
• Approximately 155,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days.

"At a time when research shows that the U.S. spends nearly twice as much on healthcare as other high-income countries, yet has less effective population health outcomes, the 100 Top Hospitals are setting a different example by delivering consistently better care at a lower cost," said Ekta Punwani, 100 Top Hospitals® program leader at IBM Watson Health.
