Weight Loss Surgery at BSA Gives Mom New Lease on Life

July 23, 2019

For years, Chylo Graham was on a diet rollercoaster and wanted desperately to step off.

“I had tried all diets and my body just wouldn’t cooperate,” Graham explained. “Every time I would lose 15 pounds, I would gain back 30.”

At 27 years old, Graham weighed 265 pounds. The mother of four struggled to keep up with her children and husband on hikes and when visiting amusement parks.

“I got on a ride once and they told me I couldn’t ride because the seatbelt wouldn’t buckle,” Graham shared.

The excess weight was also taking a toll on her feet.

“Every morning when I got out of bed it would be almost crippling on my feet,” Graham explained.

With the support of her family, Graham decided to pursue bariatric surgery at BSA.

“It was a big step,” Graham said. “I wanted to be able to run and hike with my kids, and not be the straggler in the back. I wanted to be able to ride a rollercoaster and learn to waterski.”

On June 26, 2018, Graham had gastric sleeve surgery.

“It went really well,” Graham said. “The staff at BSA was amazing.”

A year after her surgery, Graham has lost a total of 85 pounds and is able to participate in more family activities.

“Physically and mentally, I am so much better,” Graham explained. “I’m more active. If the kids are outside, my husband and I are outside. We are always racing. We haven’t gone to any amusement parks lately but I have no doubt I can ride the rollercoasters!”

Graham is no longer experiencing foot pain and is also seeing the benefits of her weight loss in her line of duty as a police officer.

“I’m more fit and I can run with my equipment,” Graham said. “It’s a great feeling.”

Looking back, Graham is happy she chose to have bariatric surgery at BSA.

“The staff at BSA was amazing,” Graham shared. “I wish I would have done it sooner!”
