The Effects of Sleep Deprivation

March 13, 2020

Getting better sleep helps you lead a better life. To achieve optimal health, prioritize your sleep schedule.

“Sleep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body each day,” explained BSA Sleep Disorders Center Manager, Jeannie Pruitt.

When you don’t get enough quality sleep, problems can arise. Poor sleep habits can be detrimental to our overall health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims that insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic.

“Getting too little sleep across the adult life span will significantly raise your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and doubles your risk of cancer,” Pruitt explained.

Research also suggests that poor sleep may lead to depression, weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, exercising during the day and refraining from consuming a large meal before bed are strategies that can help you sleep better at night.

If you or a family member is struggling to get a good night’s sleep, BSA can help. The BSA Sleep Disorders Center performs sleep studies for ages three and up. For more information, call 806-212-0130.
