Summer: The Perfect Season for Men to Improve Their Health

June, known for the start of summer, is also National Men’s Health Month. During summer months, men are encouraged to practice preventive health measures and improve their health. 

As temperatures begin to rise for the summer months, one important preventive health measure men can practice is protecting their skin from the sun.

 “Skin cancer deaths are twice as high in men as in women after the age of 50,” Robert Henry, a Physician Assistant at BSA Urgent Care Center shared. “Using sunscreen daily and staying out of the sun during the heat of the day is an easy way that men can improve their health.”

During summer months it is also common for men to attend sporting events where overindulgence in alcohol and food is a social norm. This can lead to obesity or alcohol dependency, both major issues for men’s health.

“Exercise and weight loss are a must to curb the growing epidemic of obesity,” Henry said.

Henry encourages men to get regular checkups and work on their overall health to prevent health issues from occurring. 

“Men should get regular checkups and follow-ups for chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension,” Henry said.
