Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
HBOT is a painless treatment that delivers 100% pure oxygen to your body to enhance its natural healing process and strengthen your immune system. This oxygen supersaturation causes your body to grow more blood vessels and stimulate tissue growth.
HBOT has been proven to promote new capillary and skin growth, increase the ability of white blood cells to fight infection, and reduce local swelling in the area of your wound. Patients with the following conditions may benefit from HBOT:
- Certain infections of the bone and skin
- Damaged tissue from radiation therapy
- Diabetes and diabetic wounds that are slow to heal
- Skin grafts with insufficient blood supply
- Wounds that show no improvement from other treatments after four weeks
During HBOT, you will enter a clear, pressurized chamber full of oxygen. The pressure is not uncomfortable or even noticeable to most patients. While inside this chamber, you can read, take a nap, or even watch TV. Most treatments last between an hour and a half to two hours. Patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds will typically undergo treatment every day, Monday to Friday, for five to six weeks.
