Breastfeeding Answers from Your BSA Lactation Consultant

mother breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a great way to provide your baby with a variety of nutrients that help to keep them healthy. But if you are a first-time breastfeeding mom, undoubtedly you have many questions or concerns.

That’s why we asked Tiffany Bateman, RN, BSN, IBCLC, our BSA lactation consultant, to answer some common breastfeeding questions.

Does breastfeeding get easier after the first few weeks?

Breastfeeding isn’t easy at first. The first few weeks are time consuming and exhausting, but stick with it. If you can get through the first two weeks it gets so much easier and more natural.

What are the benefits of breastfeeding?

Breastmilk give babies specific proteins that are nearly predigested to make it easier for a baby to digest. It also offers immune system benefits. For example, if a mom is exposed to the flu, her immune system will make antibodies that help protect the baby from the flu.

Other than providing your baby with a healthy diet, breastfeeding helps moms lose post-pregnancy weight and bond with their newborn.

What do I do about going back to work?

Ok, nervous moms – get a good breast pump and learn to use it before you return to work. It’s also a good idea to stockpile a bit of milk in the freezer. If you pump just one time a day during maternity leave (preferably in the morning when you have more milk) and freeze that milk, you’ll have a nice stockpile.

Where can I go for support while breastfeeding?

BSA offers a free breastfeeding support group, once a month for breastfeeding moms to network and learn tips from the BSA Lactation Consultants. I highly encourage moms to attend and to bring a support person with them.
