BSA Partners with Meals on Wheels to Provide Hot Meals to Amarillo Seniors

For more than 20 years, BSA Health System has teamed up with Meals on Wheels, a local nonprofit, to prepare and deliver hot, nutritious meals to seniors in need in the Amarillo area.

“Meals on Wheels is one small way we give back to our community,” said BSA Patient Nutrition Manager, Leasa Dean.

The BSA Dining Center staff prepares between 135-145 meals each day for the nonprofit. Once the meals are prepared, Meals on Wheels volunteers help package and deliver food across Amarillo.

Dean along with other BSA Nutrition Services department employees joined the Meals on Wheels volunteer list. They volunteer an hour each week to deliver meals.

“We have met so many nice people,” Dean said. “It’s been enlightening to see how many people there are in our community who don’t have the means to support themselves.”

Along with delivering hot, fresh food to those in need, the program provides social interactions and safety measures for the Meals on Wheels clients.

“It’s a safety thing,” Dean said. “If someone is delivering to these folks every day and they don’t answer the door, there is at least someone who can call and let the organization know that something’s wrong.”

Dean’s favorite part about volunteering with the nonprofit is getting to know the clients.

“They tell you their stories,” Dean said. “You meet them and become attached to them.”

Dean and her colleagues are proud to represent BSA and partner with Meals on Wheels.

“We feel like we’re helping the community in some small way,” Dean shared. “It’s fun to make people happy.”
